Turkey Earthquake Response
On February 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated large areas of central Turkey and northwest Syria. The death toll, already in the tens of thousands is increasing every minute. Throughout the affected area in both countries, schools, hospitals, and apartment buildings have been leveled. Most buildings and homes are unsafe, and people are stranded outside in the freezing temperatures.
Within hours of the earthquake, GoSendMe global partners in Asia mobilized 15 teams of nearly 300 trained earthquake response specialists and assembled needed equipment and supplies as they quickly made plans to fly to Turkey. These teams of believers are well trained in disaster relief in their own country, where they have been very effective at training others in earthquake-specific response – including military units, hospitals and medical personnel, local government authorities, and school officials.
This group of Jesus-followers have left everything and followed Him. Without concern for their personal safety or financial support, they immediately responded to the need, before considering where the funding would come from. They are using their training, skill, and experience to save lives and care for thousands of hurting people, and they are trusting God to provide. We are also trusting that God will provide for these teams and their ministry through the generosity of GoSendMe supporters and partners.
The global partner teams will be in Turkey for 1-3 months, responding to urgent needs, and training local people in the most effective methods of disaster response, including:
- coordinating and training of local response and rescue teams
- training local people in international humanitarian assistance
- providing disaster relief training to local people
- organizing experts for life rescue, post-disaster resettlement, and reconstruction
- setting up tent housing
- providing food, clean water, and hygiene supplies in affected communities
- distributing urgently needed blankets and basic survival items
- starting children’s centers to provide a sense of normalcy, schedule, and care
- providing care centers for the elderly
- providing medical treatment for the injured
How Donations Are Used
The budget/funding goal of US$100,000 includes provision of:
- international airfare for team members
- safe housing
- vehicles and transportation
- purchase and/or shipping of relief supplies and emergency equipment
- ongoing support for the work and ministry of the teams
While GoSendMe does not access a percentage of any donation, we will leave it to your discretion and leading if you would like to designate a percentage of your gift to help with GoSendMe general fund and processing of incoming donations. Should you choose to do so, you would just need to let us know the percentage you wish to designate. We are just as grateful for your generosity either way.
